Just eaten and reaching for your glucose meter? Choose your fingertip. Even if your meter allows a palm or forearm sample, the FDA says an alternative-site result may be less accurate when blood sugar is changing quickly, including after eating.
Quick review checklist
- Does your meter allow alternative-site testing? Some meters can use blood from places such as the palm or forearm. Check your own meter instructions first.
- Have you just eaten or exercised? Blood sugar may be changing quickly at these times.
- What is the practical choice? Use a fingertip sample and follow your meter instructions.
Why the fingertip matters
Think of the fingertip as the usual reference point when things may be changing quickly. A permitted alternative test site is not automatically the best choice after a meal.
The FDA specifically lists having just eaten as a time to use a fingertip sample. Read the FDA guidance on Blood Glucose Monitoring Devices.
