What the Healthier Choice Logo on a Restaurant Menu Can Tell You

Eating out can mean choosing from a long list of familiar favourites, new dishes and drinks. Malaysia’s Healthier Choice Logo can offer a useful visual prompt when you are deciding what to order. It is not a label for an entire restaurant or a personalised eating plan, but it can make within-menu comparisons simpler.

What the logo means

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health describes the Healthier Dining Programme as a scheme that awards the Healthier Choice Logo to qualifying food and drink options in participating restaurants. The programme began as MyChoice in 2021 before being improved and renamed.

Menu items receive the logo when they meet set nutrient criteria. Its purpose is to help customers identify a healthier food or drink option while eating out. The programme recognises individual qualifying menu items; it does not promote a particular restaurant chain.

A helpful comparison, not a universal ranking

The most important point is that the logo compares options available at that particular restaurant. A logo-marked item is intended to be a healthier choice than other choices on the same menu. It does not mean the item is automatically the healthiest possible food in every situation, or that every item sold by that outlet has the same qualities.

For example, a familiar café may display the logo beside one drink and one snack, rather than beside its name or every menu item. Looking closely at the individual item helps you use the logo as intended.

Three simple ways to use it

  • Start with the logo: At a work lunch, use logo-marked choices to narrow a lengthy menu. Then select an option that fits your appetite and the meal occasion.
  • Check drinks individually: During a family meal, look for a logo-marked drink where one is available. Avoid assuming that all drinks at a familiar outlet are alike.
  • Notice the exact menu item: On a regular café visit, see whether the logo appears beside particular foods or drinks. Treat it as information about that choice, not a label for the whole restaurant.

A practical prompt when dining out

The Healthier Choice Logo is designed to make a healthier option easier to spot, especially when you have little time to compare a menu. Use it as one straightforward prompt alongside your own preferences and the occasion. For more general health information, visit ISAW Medical.
